Outreach

The Materials Characterization Facility (MCF) participates in campus-wide and national events in an effort to provide customized information and to inform potential users about the unique capabilities and instrumentation available within the MCF to support their research.

Some recent outreach activities are described below.

Forever Irish Nd Explores Stem

ND Explores STEM is a celebration of all things STEM at Notre Dame. Hosted by the Alumni Association, Notre Dame Research, and the Colleges of Engineering and Science, STEM-related centers, institutes, core facilities, and other campus organizations highlight advances in STEM education and research and engage with alumni from all disciplines by featuring all things research, science, and engineering. Ian Lightcap and Anna Matzner represented the MCF and its research instrumentation and capabilities, and undergraduate students associated with the MCF shared their research experiences and industry initiatives with attendees in 2022. 

IDEA Week - April 20-23, 2022
Idea Week Panel

IDEA Week is a collaborative event with industry and community leaders across the South Bend-Elkhart Region. Ian Lightcap represented the MCF in the Industry Innovation Expo as a panelist on a discussion titled "Unlocking Opportunity: New Opportunities for Collaboration Between Industry and Higher Ed in the Region" focusing on Notre Dame's unique opportunity to partner with and support legacy businesses as they advance in the digital age. Other panelists included David Go, the Viola D. Hank Professor and Chair of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering, John DeSalle, Executive Engineer-in-Residence at iNDustry Labs, and Matthew Dotson, mechanical engineering student. 

Indiana Conference on Energy Management - September 1, 2021

The 2021 Indiana Conference on Energy Management was held at the Hyatt Regency in Indianapolis, Indiana. ND Energy and the MCF were proud Silver sponsors and exhibitors. The MCF booth shared the facility's services, instruments and capabilities with conference attendees. The conference covered the current status of energy in Indiana, what the future may hold, and what businesses can do to prepare.

Virtual Indiana Conference on Energy Management - August 19, 2020

The 2020 Indiana Conference on Energy Management was held virtually. ND Energy was a Silver sponsor and virtual booth exhibitor, providing a full range of information on analytical services provided by the MCF. The conference addressed issues such as utility-scale energy storage, consumer access to regional energy markets, alternative fuel transportation, and much more.

Materials Research Society Fall Meeting and Exhibit - December 1-6, 2019

The 2019 MRS Fall Meeting and Exhibit was held in Boston, Massachusetts. The MCF was one of sixteen facilities on User Facility Row during the conference. Drawing thousands of visitors to the Exhibit Hall, Ian Lightcap and Subhash L. Shinde held one-on-one conversations with attendees who were eager to learn about capabilities and expertise available to support their research.
